Maersk Pilots Wind Sail to Cut Container Ship Fuel and Emissions
ESG Today
Maersk is partnering with London-based Anemoi Marine Technologies, a company founded in 2015 that builds wind propulsion systems for commercial ships, to pilot a Rotor Sail on a container vessel for the first time. Anemoi will design and install a single fixed Rotor Sail, 5 meters in diameter and 35 meters tall, on one of Maersk's 8,700 TEU Lima Class ships, with fitting expected in mid-2027; the vessel will keep running its normal commercial routes, likely across North and South Atlantic voyages, while the system is tested alongside its existing equipment. Anemoi typically installs three to five such sails per vessel, with each one estimated to save about a ton of fuel and roughly three tons of CO2 emissions per day, and the company has already used the technology on other ship types like bulk carriers. Maersk's Head of Fleet Technology described wind-assisted propulsion as a promising option worth testing to gauge its fit for container shipping more broadly … Click below to read more
